Atteca Garnacha

$16.99

Description

(Calatayud) Bodegas Ateca is located in northeastern Spain in the DO of Calatayud, where vineyard growers have been farming for centuries at high elevations in gravely clay and slate soils. Wines made from Garnacha grapes have always been a favorite of mine, whether they come from Spain, southern France (Grenache), or California. They range in style from juicy and simple table wines to decidedly complex and bold, and one taste of the 2015 Atteca Garnacha Old Vines shows it is definitely in the bold style! The vineyards are planted (some from the early 20th century) at 3000- foot elevation around Ateca Mountain, and are dry farmed to produce low yields of intensely flavored grapes. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 10 months to achieve a perfect balance of fruit, spicy oak, and acidity. The dark purple color and aromas of cherry, plum, cassis, mint, and toasted oak give a hint to the incredibly deep and complex flavors that envelope your palate after your first sip. This wine displays absolutely perfect balance, with flavors that linger and evolve for minutes! This wine would cost vastly more if it was from France or California, so be sure to buy accordingly and enjoy this wine throughout the far too long Minnesota winter with paella, grilled meats, stews, and mature cheeses.
