Bill McCleary Staff Selection • Fall 2015Barbera is an Italian grape that, over the years, has become a red wine of real distinction in the northern, higher altitudes of Italy. Americans have had only limited success growing Barbera due to the warm, sunny climate all-socommon to California. High Valley Vineyard, north of Napa Valley in the northeastern corner of Lake County, has created this Barbera with all the style and charm needed to produce a remarkable food-friendly wine. Blended with a small amount of Petite Sirah, here is a Barbera with solid natural acidity and a fine touch of mild tannin. Fine-tuned fruit flavors of plum, dried cherry and raspberry wrap around sweet oak and vanilla spice. The Lake County volcanic soil and cool night breezes channel the Piedmont region of Italy, resulting in a delicious wine just made for a wide range of meat or pasta dishes. Our 2012 vintage is limited, so stock up and enjoy this wonderful American Barbera.
