Andy Hall Staff Selection • Fall 2015I am on something of a White Bordeaux kick lately, having tried several bottles over the summer that completely floored me with how freaking good they were. I understand that there are many wines that are light and pleasant and easy to drink, and that we want them that way. Those wines play a noble role in our lives, but they are not the wines that I tend to recommend. I like my wines to show me something, give me some weight, some gravitas, or say something interesting to me that I haven’t heard before or not for a long time. These White Bordeaux have been hitting me over the head lately! Traditionally made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, these wines have the weight of Chardonnay, but the flavors of Sauvignon Blanc and, when done correctly, none of its sharp edges. The Semillon brings loads of other fresh flavors, if given enough time in the bottle to develop. Most White Bordeaux, particularly the ones with Semillon, are best with several years of bottle-age. This particular wine is a 50-50 blend that I think is just spectacular. Complex aromas of grass, hay, honey, flowers, and a touch of lemon introduce the wine; on the palate the flavors are true to its aromas, with a clean and refreshing mouthfeel. It does bring some weight and forceful flavors, so I would certainly not be afraid to pair this with dinner. Give it a few years in the cellar and you‘ll be even more impressed!
