Details

Developed in 1933 by Dr. Frederick Zweigelt of the two main red varietals being grown in Austria: Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent. Both are still somewhat obscure - Blaufrankisch runs fruity and a little peppery. St. Laurent tends to be smooth, fruit-driven and Pinot Noir-like, with a dark undertone that I find compelling. This bottling of Zweigelt combines all of the best features of its parents. It appears in the glass as amedium-dark wine that is translucent but not light. Aromatics of wild blackberries with hints of black pepper, followed by a lovely mid-palate mélange of wild berries, and a finish that showcases the dark notes of St. Laurent and the pepperiness of Blaufrankisch. This is about as gratifying as a 'simple' table wine can be. - Andy Hall
