Considered Spain's most famousand important wine forthe past 130 years, Rioja hasevolved in the past 20 years toinclude a more modern styleof winemaking that producesfruitier, more youthful wines. The old school method is to age the wine in old, neutral American oak barrels for long periods tocreate silky, complex wines that can be enjoyed immediately,or can age gracefully for many years. One of the only new wineries to champion this traditionalstyle is Señorío de P. Peciña. Winemakerand owner Pedro Peciña hails from a long list ofgrape growers, and was the vineyard manager forLa Rioja Alta, arguably one of Rioja's most famouswineries. He started the winery in 1992 using sustainablefarming and minimalist winemaking techniques(before "natural" wine was a thing!). He usesAmerican oak barrels of 5-6 years old to impartsubtle flavors. His vineyards are located in Rioja Altaand Rioja Alavesa, where the most famous wineriesare located. His 2014 Crianza is a beautifulwine that showcases the complexity of thisold-world style. It displays red and blackfruits up front, giving way to spice, licorice, and clove notes. Extremely well balanced,it shows an inviting warmth and sustainedfinish, yet never overpowers. This is a wonderfulexample of someone followingtheir passions and producing wines ofsubtle power and elegance. I am sure thatyou will enjoy this wine, especially as hemakes his wines available at such an incrediblyaffordable price relative to hispeers! Enjoy! - Drew Fuller
